Day 13: London Anime Con

I posted before about my intentions to photograph some cosplayers, I managed to get a job photographing at London Anime Con, I asked Genea Bailey to shoot with me because I knew there would be to much work for one person and we work really well together.

So we arrived at The Rocket in Holloway in the evening on Friday 10th, we had been picked up by the companies (Anime League) driver, as he was traveling down anyway. So we put all our equipment in the hall and set up our tables and the backdrop, and then went home. On saturday we arrived back at the Rocket at 9.30 am, we didn’t really know what to expect, but we began setting up lights and camera, first problem, we had no batteries, so we had to run to the local shop and buy batteries for the triggers and flash guns; we then discovered that we were expected to sell photos, to our knowledge we were taking portraits which Anime League would use on their site, knowing people had to buy the portraits changed our mood a bit because we knew people would be reluctant, as the convention started we managed to get some portraits taken, most people opted for the free photo with the watermark. At first we didn’t approach many people, we waited until they came to us, after a few hours we felt we wanted to be making more images so started to approach people, we were both surprised that quite a lot of people who had made the effort to dress up didn’t want their images taken, but those who did began to start paying, wether it be prints or un-watermarked images we did start to take some money. Our next problem occurred when the print orders needed to be printed, as you can see from the price guide we were meant to be shoot all day non stop, but there was no one to print the images for us, so we had no choice but to close the photo booth and print them ourselves, this caused more problems, they had advertised 6×9 photos but the computer we were using didnt have a 6×9 paper size setting, after a while we figured out that B5 is a tiny bit bigger then 6×9. We went back downstairs to shoot and everyone seemed really happy with their prints and images, we carried on shooting the rest of the day and ended up taking £65, this might not seem like much but considering most of that came from £1 sales I think we did quite well. It was a really tiring day, it wasn’t what we expected but it was fun and great experience.

This was the view from our table…
